YIN YANG and Five Elements Theory

Oriental medicine is based on the theory of YIN YANG and FIVE ELEMENTS.

We all are a part of the cosmos and have the information of the cosmos. YIN YANG are the same as the cosmos. Thus, understanding YIN YANG and FIVE ELEMENTS will help us understand our bodies.

Oriental medicine has allocated organs in accordance with this theory, established the relationships and interactions between organs, defined the functions of the organs and the BDs of those organs, and five elements locations on those BDs. For example, the Gallbladder BD starts from head and ends at a toe. Migraine, which usually lies on the Gallbladder BD, can easily be treated by making the gallbladder healthy by manipulating one or two of the FIVE ELEMENTS points of gallbladder.

History of the theory of Yin Yang and Five Elements

In order to describe the history of the theory of Yin Yang and Five Elements, Korean history shall be understood first.

The following are the brief abstracts from a web site.

There was an Empire so called Hwan-Gook (Korean phonetic alphabet), sized 12,500 miles by 5,000 miles (length by width, respectively), had a capital city located close to the lake Baikal. There were seven Emperors (so called Hwanin in Korean phonetic alphabet) in that dynasty and they governed twelve states for 3,301 years from B.C. 7197 to B.C. 3897.

One of twelve tribes secured their legitimacy moved to the mountain Baekdusan (Korean phonetic alphabet) area, which located at the north of the North Korea, and established a country so called Baedalgook (Korean phonetic alphabet), which is the predecessor of the Korea. There were eighteen Kings in that Dynasty for 1,565 years from B.C. 3897 to B.C. 2333.

There was the Fifth King (Taewooui) who governed Korea from B.C. 3512 to B.C. 3419 and lived 115 years. One of his princes was the twelfth, to be more specific, Bokhee (Fu Shi or Fu Xi, Chinese phonetic alphabet).

Bokhee was the first of the Three Sovereigns of ancient China. He is a culture hero reputed to be the inventor of writing, fishing, and trapping and the one had the arrangement of the trigrams.

Trigrams are used as the eight diagrams used in cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality, seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. Each consists of three lines, each line either "broken" or "unbroken," representing yin or yang, respectively. Due to their tripartite structure, they are often referred to as "trigrams" in English.

The trigrams are related to Taegeuk (Korean phonetic alphabet, which means the great polarity) philosophy and the five elements.

YIN and YANG

YIN and YANG are Chinese words and can be translated as negative and positive in English. Positive means that consisting in or characterized by the presence or possession of distinguishing or marked qualities or features (opposed to negative).

Followings are examples of this theory in the order of YIN – YANG.

Moon – Sun,   Ground – Sky,   Night – Day,   Cold – Hot,   Water – Fire,   Down – Up,   Fall – Rise,   Heavy – Light,   In – Out,   Inward – Outward,   Low – High,   Dark – Bright,   Muddy – Clear,   Stay – Move,   Black – Red,   Close – Open,   Arrive – Depart,   Female – Male,   Contract – Expand,   Winter – Summer,  and etc.

This theory applies to human body as below.

Interior – Exterior,   Front – Back,   Lower section – Upper section,   Bones – Skins,   Blood – Qi,   Body – Head,   Nutrition QI – Protective QI,   Essence – Spirit,   Corporeal Soul – Ethereal Soul  and so on.

Everything has YIN and YANG in it just like a coin has a front and a back. This means that there is no pure YIN or YANG but rather a matter of what is more YIN or YANG. A woman can be represented as YIN. However, inside of her is YANG and in order for her to be neutralized she will have to talk more than a man. A permanent magnet is dead because it does not change its polarity unless there is external physical force applied to it. An electron (which is arbitrarily assigned a negative charge) has positive characteristics like movement of rotation, revolution, and gyration, so it would be classified as YANG, while a proton (arbitrarily assigned a positive polarity) would have to not move to be YIN (which is in accord with scientific observation) if YIN YANG theory is accurate and true.

YIN is attracted to YANG and vice versa and therefore, life can be sustained.

The national flag of the Republic of Korea shown at left has the YIN YANG circle (Taegeuk in Korean, which means the great polarity) in the center, which reflects YIN YANG theory. The Taegeuk design dates back to the 7th century in Korea but recent excavations go back even further. The design like two entangled tadpoles is not found before the 11th century in China. This shows that the Taegeuk design and thought were utilized earlier in Korea than in China. The four trigrams represent FIVE ELEMENTS.

QI

QI (pronounced “chee” as in cheese) is the vital energy believed to circulate around the body in currents, and with characteristics of YANG, while blood is relatively YIN. Thus, when there is a problem with blood or blood flow it might have been caused by the problem of QI. It can be taken care of by manipulating QI.

Nobody has physically proven QI’s existence yet but KOSA believes that it will eventually be proven physically, just like gravity has been.

KOSA does not use the term, “blocked Qi”. Because once Qi is blocked, the organ related to that blocked Qi should die. Thus, when people say “You have blocked Qi”, it is similar to a physician saying “I am sorry we do not have treatment for you.”

Instead, KOSA says “Your organ is deficient, excessive, hot, cold or some combination of these.”

FIVE ELEMENTS

The five elements consist of WATER, WOOD, FIRE, EARTH, and METAL and are illustrated below to help readers understand them more easily.

As explained with regards to YIN YANG above, outer organs are YANG and inner ones are YIN.

e_5elements.jpg

Interaction among elements

YIN organs affect only YIN organs and YANG organs affect Yang organs only. However, when a Yin organ gets weak (deficient) the Yang organ in the same element tends to be deficient as well and vice versa. For example, if you had a deficient lung, then, most likely you would have also a deficient large intestine, because both of them are caregorized in METAL.

The relationship of Parent and Child

Foster arrows indicate the relationship of Parent and Child. The starting part of the foster arrow is the Parent while the ends of the arrows are the Children. For example, the gallbladder is the Parent of the small intestine.

When the small intestine is deficient, this has been caused by its Parent, the gallbladder. The gallbladder is not healthy enough to foster its child, the small instestine. Thus, in order to make the small intestine healthy, the gallbladder needes to be fostered (or made healthy enough to foster the small intestine).

The relationship of Subdual

In the above diagram, the think black arrows indicate the relationship of subdual. The organs at the starting points of the arrows are subduing the organs at the ends of the arrowheads.

For example, the spleen subdues the kidney and in turn the kidney subdues the heart.

If you feel languor after meal, it is understood as follows: When the working stomach gets excessive, it makes the spleen excessive in many cases. An excessive spleen would subdue the kidney stronger than in the usual condition, with an empty stomach. Since the kidney is the organ, which represents energy and has become more deficient than usual, you would feel languor.

The relationship of Overaction

This is the theory in which the opposite of subduing happens. For example, spleen (EARTH) subdues liver (WOOD) rather than liver subdues spleen. This is rarely used in KOSA.

Relationship of organs in same element

Lungs and large intestine are both in the METAL element. Many people in oriental medicine have the misconception that if the lung is in a deficient condition, then the large intestine would be in an excessive condition. Thus, the total force of YIN and YANG organs in the same element never changes.

In real world, deficient lungs usually accompany deficient large intestine and vice versa.

The sensory functions are mostly controlled by the YIN organs or indicate the health status of their own organ. For example, most problems of the eyes including vision are due to an unhealthy liver. Color blindness could have a chance of getting treated if the liver improves.

Wood - Liver and Gallbladder - Eyes

A lady with a lot of pain in her whole body was being treated by a KOSA acupuncturist. She also had a vision problem where she only had peripheral vision and could not see forward, but she did not mention her vision problem to the acupuncturist. A physician told her there was no remedy. Guess what? The acupuncturist quenched the FIRE point of her Liver BD to treat the symptoms she told him about. She then could see in front of her which she had never been able to do until that moment.

Fire – Hear and Small Intestine - Tongue

Dry tongue, stiff tongue, infection on the tongue, or tongue cancer might be caused by a hot heart.

There was a young lady who had a white tumor in the center of her tongue. It was measured three sixteenths and one thirty seconds in length and diameter and had been present for a few months.

Her parent took her to a physician and the treatment was laser-cutting. A couple of weeks later it grew back.

Since it was located at the center of her tongue, quenching the FIRE points of the heart and the kidney made her tumor fall off naturally, and it has not come back for more than two years.

The kidney was quenched because its Bonghan duct is connected to the Conception BD, which is located at the front center of the body.

Once again, oriental medicine’s approach is to make the organs healthy, and improved organs can then treat the symptoms.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach – Lips (Mouth)

Dry lips, which could even result in bleeding, would probably be caused by hot stomach and quenching stomach would make them normal.

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine - Nose

The nose has been regarded as the door of the lung in oriental medicine. Sinus infection, sinusitis, ozena, anosmia (no sense of smell), bleeding due to dryness and splitting (dryness causes even bleeding) nasal skin problems and so on are the result of an unhealthy (most likely deficient and hot) lung.

Water – Kidneys and Bladder - Ears (Genitals and Anus)

Problems with the ears, genitals and anus including tinnitus (or ringing noise), impaired hearing etc. would be able to be treated successfully, even though many people believe that impaired hearing is a typical incurable disease or symptom.

A lady had no feeling on the sole of her feet and felt she was walking on clouds. During the third or fourth treatment, the KOSA acupuncturist found her wearing a hearing aid and asked her if she had not noticed any difference in her hearing capability. He asked her to take the hearing aid off because he thought there was a good chance that her hearing had improved. The reasoning is that he was treating her kidney and the Kidney BD starts from the sole of her foot. Because the improved kidneys had improved her walking capability, they should have helped her hearing as well. After examining her hearing, amazingly, she was able to hear almost perfectly. After that, she has never worn the hearing aid again.

An ex-coworker retired a few years ago. Working in chemical plants for a few decades, his hearing had been impaired. I put a magnet on his FIRE point of the kidney to quench it. Next morning, he told me that he did not realize how loud he used to watch TV until after the treatment.

These are very important functions of the organs and without understanding this, diagnosis and treatment would almost be impossible. In general, these ten organs (in the first two columns) are treated as fundamental parts of the body, but KOSA understands it in a more detailed fashion as follows:

1. Organs interact with other organs by fostering, being fostered, subduing and being subdued.

2. Organs interact with their related tissue as shown in the bottom row in the above table.

3. Organs interact with blood and Qi

Wood - Liver and Gallbladder – Sinews and Tendon

KOSA believes that Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS) and paralysis are pretty much the same disease with different names and symptoms, and they are mostly caused by unhealthiness of the liver (hot, hot and deficient, hot and excessive, deficient or excessive) and possibly other organ(s). For example, since the Lung BD ends at the tip of the thumb, if the thumb is a part of the symptoms, then the lung would most likely have a problem, although many people believe that it's only a neuronal system disease.

Fire - Heart and Small Intestine – Blood Vessels

The heart and small intestine are in charge of the blood vessels. Varicose veins would be a typical example of this. Manipulating the heart and/or small intestine would be an effective treatment.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach - Flesh

Being corpulent or thin would mean these organs are excessive or deficient, respectively. If the spleen and stomach are excessive, they would weaken the WATER organs, the kidney and bladder. If you are overweight, then you have most likely weak kidney and/or bladder. However, many people have deficient EARTH organ(s) with deficient WATER organ(s) also.

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine – Hair and Skin

In traditional oriental medicine, it is understood that the lungs are in charge of the skin. Considering that the lung is exposed to the air, they can be treated as a part of skin. However, KOSA thinks that the large intestine is the organ in charge of the skin because the skin is YANG rather than YIN and YANG interacts with YANG. The body hair is under the control of the lung. KOSA believes most skin diseases can successfully be treated by manipulating the large intestine.

Water – Kidneys and Bladder – Marrow and Bones

As explained about the WATER element and organs, the bones are under the control of the kidney. Arthritis, which has been defined as an “incurable disease” by the FDA, would be able to be treated successfully with proper manipulation of the kidney and organs in charge of the problematic area.

Wood – Liver and Gallbladder – Nails (Toenails)

Smooth and clean nails will represent that your liver is healthy, but if they are deformed and/or rough that means the liver might have problem.

Fire – Heart and Small Intestine

If your face is too reddish, then your heart might be hot an/dor excessive. On the contrrary, a pale face usually means a cold and/or deficient state of heart.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas – Breast and Lips

Although breast cancer is generally believed to be caused by a problem of the breast itself, KOSA believes that it is a result of the  stomach’s unhealthiness, because the Stomach BD pass the breasts. Those patients with breast cancer would most likely have problem(s) related to the stomach, for example, indigestion, hyperacidity, and so on.

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine – Hair on Body

Too much or too little hair on the body would probably be an indication of problems of the lung and/or large intestine. This item has, in general, not been used as a health issue and/or a measure to diagnose METAL organs in KOSA.

Water – Kidneys and Bladder – Hair at Head

Alopecia, baldness and rough hair are typical problem caused by unhealthy WATER organs.

Wood – Liver and Gallbladder – Tears

Tearing too much (epiphora) or dried eyes would be caused by coldness or hotness of the WOOD organ(s), respectively. They could be caused by deficiency or excessiveness as well, independent of the organs' temperature.

Fire – Heart and Small Intestine – Sweat

Too much sweating might not seem to be an important issue but just an uncomfortable symptom in normal life. Nonetheless, when someone wants to be a surgeon and is sweating too much, they would probably not be qualified because they may not be able to hold surgical instruments properly. I heard that a student in medical college had to have surgery as a treatment of the swar glands in the armpit.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach – Thick Saliva

Most babies who are drooling thick saliva show they have healthy EARTH organs. If their drooling is much more or less than other babies, then they might have a problem with the EARTH organs.

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine – Snivel / Nasal mucus

Snivel or nasal mucus is an indication of the lung. Some people say that thickness and thinness of the mucus is an indicator of a cold or a hot lung, respectively, but I do not think they are that relevant.

Water – Kidneys and Bladders – Shallow Saliva

Oriental medicine considers the kidney as a key organ for sustaining life, and swallowing your own saliva as frequently as possible is one of secrets of longevity. Dry mouth due to lack of saliva would be a sign of your kidney’s unhealthiness.

Wood – Liver and Gallbladder - Anger

Anger affects the liver directly and enormously, and because the liver is in charge of the muscles and/or tendons, so it might result in palsy. Even if your anger is weak, the continued anger would gradually damage your liver and eventually you will suffer liver-related issues including palsy. For those people who get angry easier than other people, the WOOD organ(s) would probably be unhealthy and treating them would make them more tolerant of anger provoking situations.

Fire – Heart and Small Intestine – Happiness and Laugh

Have you heard of people who died watching sporting events? Being overly happy can hurt the heart. Nevertheless, there is a lot of research on the relationship between laughing and longevity. Pleae refer to the link by lead researcher Dr. Michael Miller, M.D.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach – Pensiveness, Stress

Medical research has been trying to figure out the relationship between stress and appetite. Cortisol hormone and Corticotrophin Releasing hormone are typical subjects the scientists are looking at. In oriental medicine, a healthy spleen and stomach would make a person more tolerant of stress, and mild stress would not result in an increased appetite. Stress would make the stomach warmer and the stomach would ask you to eat more.

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine - Sadness, Grief and Sorrow

Sadness hurts the lung and large intestine, and the weakened METAL organs would more easily be affected by sadness. On the contrary, a healthy METAL organ(s) would treat chronic depression.

Water – Kidneys and Bladder – Fear and Fright

I met a middle school girl who had spinal curvature. Looking at the five elements table, I told her mother that she needs to avoid novels, movies, or anything that would make her daughter scared or frightened, because those emotions would harm the kidney and, eventually, her bones including her spine. She was very surprised to hear this and told me her daughter was infatuated with them and she kept reading and watching as much as she could even though she was shuddering with fear. Avoiding horror material and using a magnet to subdue the FIRE point of the kidney for a few months corrected her spinal problem.

Clenching one's hand is a typical symptom of palsy. It is caused by WOOD organ(s) issues. It makes sense because a problematic WOOD organ(s) would not allow you to move or stay still as you want. To the contrary, recovering WOOD organ(s) would probably get rid of that kind of problems.

Fire – Heart and Small Intestine – Depressed

You might be confused because it was stated METAL organs are responsible for depression. However, depression could also be caused by problematic FIRE organ(s). How to judge which organ(s) is responsible and needs to be treated is explained in the book.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach - Sneeze

Sneezing is a sign of problematic EARTH organ(s).

Diabetes: There are two types. Type I diabetes is so called insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes as well and a severe form of diabetes mellitus, in which insulin production by the beta cells of the pancreas is impaired, usually resulting in dependence on externally administered insulin, the onset of the disease typically occurring before the age of 25.

Type II diabetes is non-insulin-dependent diabetes, adult-onset diabetes, maturity-onset diabetes. A mild, sometimes asymptomatic form of diabetes mellitus characterized by diminished tissue sensitivity to insulin and sometimes by impaired beta cell function, exacerbated by obesity and often treatable by diet and exercise.

A few years ago when I was in Korea to visit my parents, I happened to talk to a man and he told me a story. A year earlier, he visited a doctor for annual check up and was forced to be hospitalized because of his high blood sugar level. All of sudden, he had to change his clothes with the hospital provided and wandering around while getting usual care from doctors and nurses. One day, he found, very fortunate and lucky to him, that no diabetics had walked out of the hospital other than lying on the bed for the dead. He escaped the hospital one night and did nothing but walking with a backpack on his back with food and water bottles. In a couple of weeks later, his blood sugar level went down to normal. As soon as he finished his talking, I heard a bell ringing and I was very much glad finding a secret or key for the cure of diabetes. My understanding his healing process was that walking made his liver weaker and with less subduing force applied to pancreas it recovered its ability to produce insulin.

Whether it is type I or type II, pancreas is the key organ and western medicine has been trying to take care of diabetes symptom with externally fed insulin in either type. Also, the amount fed would mostly be more than required because there is no feasible scientific yet economic method available to control the amount precisely. However, I think since the fact that insulin fed externally would confuse the health control system of the body and the system will eventually order pancreas to shut down and make it atrophied. Diabetics would have rely on insulin more than before and getting peace of mind would make them too lazy to be cautious and to make their bodies healthier. When doctors tell them their feet or hands would have to be cut, usually it is too late to regret even though I think KOSA could help them at that late stages as well.

Please search “Diabetes Deception” on the internet and get surprised, feared, frightened and eventually smart if you are one of those diabetics or one of your family member, relatives or friends is so. Live longer and die healthy rather than wasting your valuable time and money including your close people’s.

Fire – Heart and Small Intestine – Seeing

Frankly to say, I have not found certain relationships between FIRE organs and seeing.

Earth – Spleen / Pancreas and Stomach – Sitting

Sitting on a chair for a long time would harm EARTH organ(s).

Metal – Lungs and Large Intestine – Lying

Bedsore is the typical disease and believed that it is caused by continued skin contact with bed cover but this would be more detailed explanation that large intestine weaken by lying too long would result in worse protectiveness of skin and the weakest area, the back skin would get bedsore.

Water – Kidneys and Bladder – Standing

A typical occupational (industrial) disease is back injury and back pain due to standing pretty much all day long. Those people with jobs involving standing for a long time would be with weak WATER organs, especially kidney and since kidney is in charge of bones, they would have higher chance of bone related disease than others would.

Changing facing direction even shows differences on grasping force of the fingers.

The Bi-Digital O-Ring Test (BDORT) was discovered by Dr. Yoshiaki Omura MD, ScD, in 1977. Omura, who has degrees in electrical engineering and in medicine, became aware of the Applied Kinesiology Dysfunction Localization Principle in which touching a dysfunctioning body area causes a large muscle (often in the arm) to weaken. While researching brain circulation, pathological tenderness, and the hand's grasping force, Omura became convinced that finger muscles were particularly useful for locating and diagnosing physical dysfunction. He applied for a patent in 1985, stating, "It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a method which permits imaging of internal organs, localizing exact organ representations at the front and back of the body of a patient and to provide significant diagnostic capabilities." The US Patent Office issued the patent in 1993. You can find more detailed information how to do it.

Different kinds of fruits, food, vegetable and etc. would also show the differences in force. There is a few people fascinated by this patent and apply it to diagnosis and treatment. However, I was told that the result could easily be affected by other person implementing the test (if the tester thinks it would be better for the patient, then the results have tendency following tester’s thought). If you could do it alone, it might be a good tool for your health. Also, fingers used for the test are on BDs, the result might represent only some part of the whole body condition.

Color

It may be difficult to believe that the color also affects the organs. For them with weak lungs white clothes would be helping them.

TCM uses colored tape for the treatment and even in western medicine colored light is sometimes used for weight loss, insomnia, skin disease, pain, acne, depression, high blood pressure, bedsore and etc. I do not know how effective using color or colored light is, but because there is no black light the approach would start with limit.

Climates

Wind might harm EARTH organs, heat might harm FIRE organs and so on.

Sound Scale

Sound could also be used for treating. For your information, the dial tone you would hear when you pick up the phone is Ra (A).

Kimchi is an essential side dish of Korean food and, of course, is originated in Korea. Preparing Kimchi requires hot pepper because HOT of METAL subdues SOUR of WOOD and it makes Kimchi preserved for a longer periof time.

Food helps its MOTHER ELEMENT’s organ(s). For example, pork helps people with weak lungs or large intestine. However, as mentioned in Harmful Taste, sweet food harms WATER organ(s).

Salt is supposed to help METAL organs including WATER organs. The myth is that many doctors recommend people to decrease consumption of salt. Of course, too much is always worse than too little. No matter how good it is, if it is too much, then it usually gets bad.

Until a few hundreds years ago, salt was used as currency and the word, “salary” was originated from salt in late 14th century as soldier’s allowance for the purchase of salt.

The most of the salt we can get in grocery store has been chemically crystallized and bleached and contains very little amount of minerals. I believe there is no industrialized technology can recover 100 % of chemicals from the process and I think it might be ther reason why we need to decrease salt consumption.

Our bodies have capability to regulate and control salinity in our bodies.

Good salt tastes good and has a lot of minerals essential to our bodies and I have seen a few reports that salt has helped patients. Korean natural salt is much cheaper than others.

Important thing I would like to mention here is about beef, cheese, milk, butter and anything from cows and oxen. The reason why beef is more tasteful than pork is fat. The fatter meat, the more tasteful it feels. When you would like to make food more tasteful, you consume it with butter or oil. When you do B.B.Q. you would find a piece of beef never stops oozing fat oil out even though it looks it has totally been burned. That much fat you would enjoy the taste of fat. According to my research, fat’s melting point of beef and pork is from 104 to 122 deg. F. and from 91.4 to 114.8 deg. F., respectively. This means that not all beef fat would melt in our bodies unless they are chemically digested. In addition to that, beef or dairy products would support FIRE organ(s), consuming lots of them would result in too much heat on body. Even though some people claim that cancer cells could be killed by heating them, I think they would have to be quenched. Also, I think there is no feasible method heating cancer cells without sacrificing healthy cells.

There was a 14 years girl who had atopic skin problem and so bad constipation that she could ease herself only once a week and she used to usually make the full toilet. Her other problem was atopic dermatitis. Since heat caused by consuming EARTH food would subdue METAL organ(s) and large intestine in charge of skin, I recommended her and her mother to avoid the food in EARTH column. About two weeks later, her mother told me that all problems had gone. A few months later, her mother told me that she fixed her daughter beef and old issues resurrected right away and then, of course, quitting consumption of the food in EARTH column made her daughter’s problems disappeared.

If you have a skin disease, please avoid the food in EARTH column and to try to consume those in WATER column, of course, only if you do not have allergy to them. If you have an allergy to those in WATER column, you would have to find other way to make your METAL organ(s) healthy. If avoiding EARTH food would not help you, then all kinds of meat, then all kinds of fish would have to be avoided as well. If still it would not help, then avoid all food, which involve mechanical process and artificial spices and additives.

While KOSA believes that most of skin diseases are due to the problem of large intestine, liver’s unhealthiness could be cause even though it has been seen seldom.

It would be a very interesting research to find out the corelationship between consumption of beef and pork per capita and respiratory disease or skin diseases.

Vegetable Oil

The following are extract from Wikipedia.

There are two methods to extract oil.

The first one is physical extraction, which does not use solvent extracts. It is made the "traditional" way using several different types of mechanical extraction. This method is typically used to produce the more traditional oils (e.g., olive, coconut etc.), and it is preferred by most "health-food" customers in the USA and in Europe. Expeller-pressed extraction is one type, and there are two other types that are both oil presses: the screw press and the ram press.

The second one is The "modern" way of processing vegetable oil is by chemical extraction, using solvent extracts, which produces higher yields and is quicker and less expensive. The most common solvent is petroleum-derived hexane. This technique is used for most of the "newer" industrial oils such as soybean and corn oils.

One more thing about vegetable oil; A high consumption of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are found in most types of vegetable oil (e.g. soybean oil, corn oil - the most consumed in USA, sunflower oil, etc.), may increase the likelihood that postmenopausal women will develop breast cancer. A similar effect was observed on prostate cancer in mice. Plant based oils high in Monounsaturated Fatty Acids, such Olive oil, peanut oil, and canola oil are relatively low in omega-6 PUFAs and can be used in place of high-polyunsaturated oils.[citation needed] However, palm oil and coconut oil, even as unhydrogenated "natural" oils, are high in saturated fatty acids (lauric and myristic acid) that have demonstrated negative effects upon plasma cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors. In fact, they are commonly used in animal studies to induce atherosclerosis to investigate the possible causes of the disease.

The point is that nothing is perfect in the world and not all chemicals used during the second process are recovered 100.00%. That means that no matter how small it is, it resideds always in the oil and would be consumed by us. Of course, FDA has established the strict guide line and been supervising manufacturers, I hope. Nevertheless, would solvent be the only pollution we are taking everyday?

Olive Oil

The following are the abstracts from web site.

One common myth is that heating olive oil will make it saturated or trans-fatty. This is not true. As far as making a saturated fat, according to Dr. A. Kiritsakis, a world renowned oil chemist in Athens, in his book Olive Oil from the Tree to the Table -Second edition 1998, all oils will oxidize and hydrogenate to a tiny degree if repeatedly heated to very high temperatures such as is done in commercial frying operations. Olive-pomace oils and virgin olive oils are both highly monounsaturated oils and therefore resistant to oxidation and hydrogenation. Studies have shown oxidation and hydrogenation occurs to a lesser degree in olive oil than in other oils. But in any case, the amount of hydrogenation is miniscule and no home cook would ever experience this problem.

The International Olive Oil Council (IOOC) says about frying food with olive oil: When heated, olive oil is the most stable fat, which means it stands up well to high frying temperatures. Its high smoke point (410ºF or 210ºC) is well above the ideal temperature for frying food (356ºF or 180ºC). The digestibility of olive oil is not affected when it is heated, even when it is re-used several times for frying

YIN, YANG and FIVE ELEMENTS - Conclusion

We have learned those things have been overlooked and treated as totally irrelevant to health (disease, illness, pain and so on.) have actually been affecting our everyday lives and health.

We know the formulas and fundamental rules. From next section, we will learn how to apply them dealing with various challenges and, I hope, you would be able to take care of yourself when you complete the careful perusal and understanding them.
